You will see a key in the crank. Turn the crank until #1 piston is all the way up in the cylinder. You will see that the key in the crank will be stright up. and when you put the crank gear ( SMALL GEAR ) on, The dot on it will be stright up.

Now the cam gear ( BIG GEAR ) bolt it on the cam, and find the dot on it. leave chain

off for now. Then take and turn the cam gear until the dot is stright down over top of the crank gear dot. It will be hard to turn, but turn it with something.

Now remove the cam gear and put chain and gear back on. Tighten all 3 bolts TIGHT

on the cam gear. Now check the 2 dots, They should be stright over top of each other in a stright line. THATS IT. Put it all back together now.

Where do the timing marks need to be for a timing chain on a Chevy 350 when on number one firing position?

I just rebuilt a 350. when you install the gears the two dots have to allign, but for the #1 to be in the firing position the marks are opposite of each other. Every cam chain gear set is different but the easiest way to tell is to put the harmonnic balancer at 0 and see if both valve for the #1 cylinder are closed

How does the timing belt need to be put on a 1991 Nissan Pathfinder?

if it is a 4 cylinder, the cam shaft dot is straight up and the crank shaft is straight up. the dots are on the gears. easier to visit a mechanic if its a V6 with overhead cams... trust me

Will it hurt a Chevy 350 to run it with the timing dots are not opposite of each other and the distributor turned 180 degrees?

The engine will not run.

Does it matter what stroke you are on to set top dead center?

If you are installing the Distributor, #1 cylinder must be at TDC / Top Dead Center on the COMPRESSION stroke. If you are installing Timing chain and gears everything will be correct when you line up the dots on the 2 gears.
