The traditional story of New York's origin is that in 1626 the island of Manhattan was bought by the Dutchman Peter Minuit from the Lenape Native Tribe for the equivalent of $24. It was named New Amsterdam, and became a trading post for the Dutch West India Company. The goal was the lucrative trade in animal furs. In 1664, the English took over the colony naming it New York. In return for the "change of owners" the British gave the Dutch the lucrative British colony of Suriname. By 1680, the population had grown to 3,000.
