If you don't already have an oil filter wrench, pick one up at your local parts store. They're cheap and usually work well. Failing that, an old remedy is to drive a screwdriver through the filter body and use it's leverage to loosen the filter. I'd use this ONLY as a last resort. You're better off with an old filter on the car than a damaged one that leaks oil!
No..maybe a oil filter wrench to remove it, but, install it by hand (HAND TIGHT)
The oil filter on the 1997 Avalon is located on the side of the engine that is toward the front of the car. The filter will probably be so tight that you will have to use an oil filter wrench to remove it.
You need a flat screwdriver to remove the belly pan. A 12mm hex socket/wrench to remove the oil plug. and an oil filter wrench to remove the oil filter if it is too tight.
The alternator in a 2000 Jaguar is a tight fit. You will have to remove the motor mount, oil filter, and filter adapter, then jack the engine up slightly to have clearance to remove the alternator.
If the filter is on too tight and you cant get a good grip, stab it with a screwdriver and twist it off. Its messy but it really works.

any oil filter on any vechile should only be hand tight. be sure and check for leak's after installing oil.
Most European cars use a cartridge type oil filter. It's on the top of the engine, usually near the power steering reservoir. Use the proper oil filter cap wrench to remove the cap and filter assembly. Replace the cartridge and related seals, and install a little more than hand tight. You need to remove the filter before draining the oil pan, or the oil contained in the filter housing will not be changed.
Set the Goldwing on it's center stands. Directly in the center of the bike, between the frame and the front tire, is a threaded plug, directly under the canister for the oil filter. Slowly remove this plug, placing an appropriate oil pan underneath, and allow it to drain. Then remove the oil filter canister, allowing the oil to flow into the oil pan. Remove the oil filter, and place new filter onto the bolt (It will be a tight fit, but make sure it is seated fully). Replace the oil cannister O-Ring, and smooth a drop of oil over it. Replace the cannister onto the engine, tighten 1/8 turn past hand tight. Replace the oil drain plug, Remove the oil filler plug, located on the right hand side, and fill 3.9 quarts. Verify the oil level through the oil sight glass, Set the Goldwing on it's center stands. there is no torque on the oil filter!! when putting back on tighten the filter hand tight as much as you can.
Run the engine for several minutes so the oil gets hot and thins. Safely lift the car onto jack stands or another elevating device. Remove the drain plug from the oil pan. Let oil drain, then remove the oil filter, replace oil filter and drain plug. You may need a filter wrench to remove the old filter, but not use it to install the new filter, hand tight only. Add 4qts of your preferred motor oil through the engine oil fill cap, replace cap. Check the oil level using the engine oil dipstick. Be sure to properly dispose of the used motor oil and filter.
