If it is red fluid leaking, then you have a transmission leak.
If it is oil then the rear main oil seal is leaking on the back of the engine.
You need to look at the top back part of the engine to make sure the back of the intake is not leaking oil, check back corners of the valve covers for leaks too.
Need to make sure the oil sending unit that is back beside the distributor is not leaking oil. Ruel these things out before you tackle the rear main oil seal.
Rear main seal.
No its not possible for motor oil to leak into any transmission, that are not directly connected to each other for fluid transfer. they're only attached by a flywheel or in autos case a flexplate.... It is possible for the engine oil to leak at the rear seal into the transmission, but it will leak to the ground through a hole in the bottom of the transmission made for this purpose.
you need to be more specific... what kinda leak is it?? most likely engine oil or transmission oil, check on your dipstick and make sure the engine is at proper level, to check the transmission you have to crawl under the truck and remove a plug on the side of it. also how is the truck running rough??
Crankcase or motor oil is thicker than transmission oil. That's one difference, there may be more (other than color)
its a rear main oil seal that has to be replaced. mine leaks too
You can check the motor oil or the transmission fluid.
No. The transmission is sealed to the input shaft and torque converter inside the bell housing of the transmission. It is possible to leak oil into the bell housing, but that will not migrate into the sealed transmission. If your transmission fluid looks as dark as your motor oil, a flush of your transmission may be in order. -Steve
Either the distributor drive or the valve covers.
That depends on where the oil leak is, is it in the motor self or is one of the seals leaking?
The motor oil drain plug is located on the motor oil pan. The Transmission oil drain plug is located on the Transmission oil pan.
Seriously? A 305 Chevy motor does not take "transmission fluid"! The transmission takes transmission fluid, and the motor takes oil. The 305 should hold 5 quarts of oil I believe. As for the transmission, I believe that all depends on what transmission you have. Seriously? A 305 Chevy motor does not take "transmission fluid"! I imagine it would leak oil like crazy between where the engine and transmission come together... good luck!!
