You either spilled some oil around the area or you have some leaky gaskets. Oil dripping onto the exhaust system could catch fire so have it looked at by a trusted mechanic soon.

The fact that the radiator was dry indicates a serious problem. The engine may have been smoking from the oil fill cap because it had overheated. The engine shut off and that is not a good sign. Do not drive this car anymore until you get this repaired. Hopefully you did not blow a head gasket when it overheated.
