i just had that fixed on my 97 jetta trek ... it's located in the distributor, just buy a new distributor it's about $400 dollars tho.. unless u get a used 1 .. once u replace that it willl turn off your check engine light!
As far as i Know, is inside the engine block, behind the flywheel ;) in that area

it is also throwing a code for the camshaft position sensor. and yes i did have the timing checked
Weird location, But it's just behind Oil filter. Probably if you get ubder the car you should be able to see it.

YES THERE IS A SENSOR, IT IS LOCATED ON THE FRONT OF THE ENGINE WHERE THE TRANSMISSION AND BLOCK BOLT TOGETHER NEXT TO THE STARTER AND ALMOST UNDER THE OIL FILTER COOLER that's the CRANKSHAFT sensor, crankshaft and camshaft are not the same
