Check the ignition coil or maybe the distributor cap. See if you are actually getting spark to the first plug by taking it out, reattaching the spark plug wire, then set it against the block while trying to restart it. If it spaks, the coil or cap shouldn't be bad. The last thing to do is to make sure the fuel pump is working. See if you can hear it coming on by turning the key on without starting it. You should hear a whirring near the trunk. If you don't, you probably have a bad fuel pump. Good Luck!!
Bad battery and/or alternator.
Trying turning the key from the off to on position 5 times that got the car started on my girlfriends 99 Tercel. Trying turning the key from the off to on position 5 times that got the car started on my girlfriends 99 Tercel.

The check engine light on a Toyota Tercel can come on for a variety of reasons. It can be come on whenever there is a problem with the engine that needs attention. To reset it, disconnect the battery for a few minutes then re-connect it.
It sounds like your alternator is no longer recharging your battery. You probably need a new alternator.
Yes it is. http://www.toyoland.com/cars/tercel.html DOHC engines are generally going to be interference.
disconnect negative battery tml.,remove the plug from the alternator, remove the main battery wire from the stud on the alternator, remove the lock bolt, swing alternator down to remove belt, remove pivot bolt, swing alt. until its out. replacement is reverse of remova; To take out the alternator on a 88' tercel, you have to do it from under the car
