IT IS THE BLOWER MOTOR RESISTOR, IT'S USUALLY FOUND BEHIND THE GLOVEBOX COMPARTMENT, THEY COST ABOUT THIRTY DOLLARS AND ARE EASY TO FIX. HAVE A MECHANIC TAKE IT OUT FOR YA AND GIVE HIM THE NEW PART TO PUT IN.
Sounds like your head gasket has gone bad. This is causing coolant to get inside of the motor. Bad head gaskets are a common problem with alero's. You can also try changing the thermostat, your symptoms can also be caused by a bad thermostat.
If the car is over heating then it could be that the electric cooling fan motor is not working so the fan can

First thing to check is whether you have sufficient coolant in the vehicle.
My 2001 VW Passat is has the same problem!!
During an emergency. i.e. when the heat pump is not working. If your heat pump can not keep your house warm, then the auxiliary heating coils (same thing as emergency heat) will come on automatically. If not, then there is a problem with your heating system.
the fan is working but no heat
heter not working on 2006 gto . i do have air ,but no heat.
IF YOUR TALKING ABOUT YOUR A/C OR HEAT, YOU HAVE A DEFECTIVE BLOWER MOTOR RESISTOR
prarie 650 over heat light not working
Either the fan is no good or the heat sensor in your radiator, that turns the fan on is not working!!
It sounds like the guage is working fine. Since you have little or no heat when you say the guage isn't working it sounds like the thermostat is getting stuck open causing your coolant to be constantly cooled (it isn't closing so the engine can warm up sufficiently to provide heat). Replace your thermostat and I bet your problem will go away.
