usually, official divorce paperwork can come through the US Mail system, but is customarily sent either Certified or Registered Mail. This is the only way the court actually knows that the respondent has indeed received the notice of divorce proceedings.

As to what happens if one party does not want to dissolve this marriage, I leave that part of the answer to someone more knowledgeable.

How the papers were delivered is not really the issue here. You do not have to sign them, but as far as your relationship with your husband, the handwriting is on the wall. It is over. So, you need to do what is best for you and your financial situation. Read the divorce papers and see what they say. Definitely obtain advice from a great lawyer of your own before signing.

Often though, if the marriage has been of short duration, no children, and no particular assets, uncontested is the least expensive way to go. Make sure, though, that all taxes have been paid, credit cards are closed out and so on. Include those items on the divorce decree and obtain quit claims for any houses, cars, etc. that should be yours.
