Remember, it takes 3 things to get an engine to start, air, fuel and spark. Air is always there and shouldn't be a problem, so the problem is either lack of fuel or spark or a problem concerning when the fuel and spark is happening. If you turn the ignition switch to the "ON" position and hear the fuel pump running for a few seconds, it is a good bet the fuel pump is working. if you remove one of the spark plug boots from the plug and lay it back on the top of the spark plug loosely and crank the engine, if you are getting spark, you will hear a snapping or cracking sound when the spark plug should fire. (remember that the coil on an electronic ignition auto might put out up to 30,000 to 50,000 volts! don't touch that spark plug wire! it will shock you. don't ask me how I know this is true!). If both of the above are true, it is time to check the timing of the car with an inductive timing light. An inductive timing light connects to the battery and to the first spark plug wire, while cranking the car, point the timing light at the timing gauge located on or around the crank pulley. There is a slot on the crank pulley and an indicator telling if the timing is before top dead center (BTDC) or after (ATDC) zero degrees is top dead center (TDC) if when you crank the car while pointing the timing light at the indicator, if the slot on the crank pulley seems to stand still when the timing light flashed and the slot is within the area of the indicator, the car is close to being in time. If you don't see the slot on the indicator when using the timing light while cranking, the timing belt must be checked to see if it is broken or it has lost a few teeth from the belt.

How do you start a motor that hasn't ran for two years?

I would suggest with the key.If that doesnt work then you will have to provide more information, like does it turn over? is the battery dead? is there oil? water? If it doesnt start then the question you should be asking is WHY doesnt my engine start, and then provide some information for us to go onAnswer 2Before attempting to start it, remove the spark plugs (assuming its a petrol engine), pour a teaspoon of engine oil into each bore.Turn the engine over for a couple of seconds, with the plugs still out. This will check that the bores are not rusted, or filled with water and also provide a good seal at the piston rings. Also it will confirm that the engine hasn't seized and the bearings are all OK.Now put the plugs back in and try for a start.

What would cause the engine to crank but car not to start in a 95 Saturn SL2?

My mom's '96 SL2 recently had this problem, the battery was fairly new but we tried to jump start it to no avail. Had it towed and got a diagnosis of "flooded spark plugs" by her mechanic. The plugs were were replaced and car ran great for about 100 miles. Now, it still runs OK, but the darn "check engine light" is on...

If the engine jumped time could it cause the spark plugs not to fire on a 1966 Valiant?

You will still have spark, car will try to start or backfire. If no spark at all the plugs see if you have GOOD spark from coil. If coil is working then you will find the problem in between the coil and the plugs, probably a distributor component issue. The ballast resister is a possible cause also.

I have a Chrysler sebring combertivle 2.5 v6 the engine rotates but will not start?

Why does your Ford fiesta diesel take a long time to start?

Your glow plugs are not heating up. You may have bad glow plugs or relay. try turning on the key ( this should start the warming of the plugs and a light on the dash will come on letting you know it is ok to start if not the relay is bad) if no luck turn off the key and let it cycle again. if it is still difficult to start you may need new glow plugs.
