St. Margaret of Scotland, Queen of Scots and widow, was born ca. 1046 in Hungary. She was the daughter of Edward the Atheling who was in exile, fleeing from the Danish kings who had usurped the English throne. At age nine, Margaret returned to her home country, but in 1066, following the Norman Conquest of King William on the death of her uncle King Edward the Confessor she was forced to seek sanctuary in Scotland. In 1070, she married King Malcolm III. As Queen of Scots, wife of the monarch, and mother of the royal children, Margaret proved herself discreet, loving, and faithful to the Church. She took an active part in the reform of the Scottish Church and promoted and supported works of charity. Queen Margaret died in 1093 at Holy Rood Palace, Edinburgh. In art, Queen Margaret is depicted in royal robes and a crown. She is shown holding a basket containing bread and coins at the gate of the royal palace and surrounded by her people in need of her compassion and charity.
