(2) screws hold on the door pull strap inside, remove them. Remove black snap in cover from around the manual unlock knob . There is one Phillips screw located inside that also secures trim, remove this screw also. Pull trim at top of glass window. There are clips on trim inside that lifts up. once trim is loose stick hand inside by lock and pull back on rod door opens. original handle has brads, must be drilled out and new one put in with nuts and bolts or brad if you have gun available.

It is a 4 door vehicle with a rear hatch.
when you open the rear hatch it is on the left side under a small square acess cover
rear drivers-side kick panel . . .
On most models, the rear washer id filled in a tank inside of the rear hatch. it is on the left just past the door frame.
You will probably find it is a mercury switch in the wiring bundle.
I have the same question for a 1995 Jeep hatch - not much help other than to validate the question.
Rear shocks/struts are bad.
