If you are meeting someone or have an appointment you should always give yourself at least an extra half hour and more if you have to travel a fair distance. These are some excuses:
Short of death there are no real excuses with the exceptions of the ones above. Once you find out what the problem is then most people have a cell phone and they can use it to call the person or the person they have a business appointment with and explain what has happened.
If you want to just plain lie, here are two great excuses for being late.
"I'll probably be late tonight because I have a class project meeting at Starbucks this evening."
"I'm stuck on the side of the road right now because I accidentally ran over a pick-axe on the freeway which made my tire blow-out."
If you need more excuses, be sure to check out the website "a good excuse".
I was driving up my street, minding my own business when I saw a big, old bulldog menacing a little, old lady who was trying to hold him off with her cane. I stopped, jumped out of my car, leaped onto the bulldog and held him with both arms. I yelled to the little, old lady to get my cell phone from the console and call 911! She walked over to the car, hopped in and sped away. I wrestled with that dog a few more minutes until someone else came by. He did stop and call 911. When the officers arrived, they each stood over me with their hands on their hips and laughed and laughed while I was still struggling with that dog.
One officer finally said, "You have just met Nefarious Nellie, notorious car thief. Right this minute she's on her way to the dog pound in a nearby city to 'rescue' another dog." The other spoke up, "You can loosen your grip on the poor dog, I'm sure he's harmless. As soon as she picks up another dog, she'll drop your car at a chop shop and take the dog to another quiet street and wait. She keeps Hot Dogs in her pockets so the dog won't run away while she shakes her cane at it."
Well, as you can imagine, it took some time to go to the police station to make a report, then I had to find a way to get here. And, by the way, I had them give me a copy of the police report because even I wouldn't believe this story.

A lame excuse is an excuse of poor quality or lack of thought. For instance, a man was late for work and he had no real reason why, so when his boss asked him why he was late, he quickly thought up something and said, "I over slept." His boss replied, "That's a lame excuse." or meaning that it was not a good excuse or good reason to be late to work.
