The removal of the head unit, or stereo on 1997 General Motors F-bodies, is a simple three step process. First the bezel surrounding the stereo must be be popped off. It is held in place by tensioned metal clips. Once the bezel is removed the head unit is retained by two bolts/screws. Removing them allows the head unit to be slid out. The final step involves disconnecting the wiring harness from the stereo.

I've just finished the process I used a Hayes manual. (best thing I ever bought to fix a car) it will take your through step by step on how to do it. There are a few quirks that you need to figure out on your own. on my 97 firebird it took me a while to figure out how to disconnect the hydraulic clutch line. Other than that it was pretty smooth.
