Get a law degree, this in it's self will lover your standards enough to be a politician should you venture out. However if you want to be honest, become extremely well versed in the State History, laws and politics then run, run, run, and maybe, just maybe you'll get elected. A common attempt is to first hold lower offices to become more well known locally, then graduate upward. I've seen this work a lot. But if you intend to be honest, look for a lonely place at the top. Politics is about wheeliing and dealing, not about what is best for the state.
