It is my best recollection that weekend warriors(National Guard and Enlisted Reserve) are not considered Viet Nam Era veterans unless they served two years of active duty during the years 1961-1974? Some sites cite 1964 as the beginning of the era and others cite different ending dates. The exception to this is if they were discharged while serving active duty for medical reasons. Active duty personnel of any branch during this era are considered Viet Nam Era veterans despite not having served in Viet Nam.
This includes those stationed in Europe, the USA, and other postings as long as they were active duty. This specifically excludes weekend drills and summer camps. Some National Guard and Reserve units WERE activated and do qualify for this recognition.
As someone with a serial number beginning with RA (regular army) I find it dishonest for someone who did not do the time to even think of claiming this status.

As someone who was in the Army Reserve during the Vietnam Era, I would absolutely say that any service during the Vietnam Era is still the Vietnam Era.
As reservists in uniform, we also endured the taunts. We also endured boot camp. We did not have to serve, but chose to do so during an unpopular time. That is worthy of acknowledgment. To try and say active duty is somehow better or superior is nonsense. The United States could not have defended its soil over many generations without the Army Reserves.

Anyone regardless of rank, branch of service, or jobspeciality, who served in country or in the waters off the coast and were awarded a Vietnam campaign ribbon indicating that they did so is a Vietnam veteran, regardless of the job they performed. The guy who was a chaplain's assistant, cook or clerk typist etc, who served there is a Vietnam veteran just as the combat veteran.

Unless you actually served in Viet Nam you are not a Viet Nam Veteran. You are considered a Veteran. I served from 1964-1967 and never was sent to Viet Nam, but was sent to Germany.
