Should Windstar interior lights turn off if the door is left ajar?

They shouldn't turn off until the battery protection feature kicks them off automatically. I can't remember but they should time out (or turn off) within 3 minutes when door is left open.
On my 1995 Ford Explorer they do for about 40 minutes , until the factory installed battery run down protection system kicks in and shuts them off

The Windstar has a position on the light dimmer scroll-wheel that turns the interior lights off, even with the doors open. Great for at the picnic, tailgate party, cleaning the car, etc, to keep from killing the battery. Make sure the dimmer switch scroll wheel is not all the way up (or is all the way down?) Also - If you have a malfunctioning "door ajar" switch, after some time, the Windstar will deactivate the interior lights. Fix the door ajar warning and the lights will resume normal functions. I'm not a mechanic / technician but on a 1997 Ford Explorer I believe that if the gauge panel dimmer switch ( to the right of your headlight switch ) is rotated all the way up it will turn on all the interior courtesy lights when the doors are closed Also , is the " DOOR AJAR " warning light on in your dash to the left of the fuel gauge , if so either a door or the liftgate is slightly ajar or a door ajar switch is sticking , I believe that will also keep the interior lights on
