They shouldn't turn off until the battery protection feature kicks them off automatically. I can't remember but they should time out (or turn off) within 3 minutes when door is left open.
On my 1995 Ford Explorer they do for about 40 minutes , until the factory installed battery run down protection system kicks in and shuts them off

Windstar interior lights wont go on?

One thing that will cause this is when a door-ajar warning goes without fixing. My Windstar rear hatch showed as ajar for quite some time - after a period, this caused the interior lights to be disabled.Flooding the hatch latch mechanisms with spray lubricant, i.e., WD-40, cleared the false ajar warning, and the interior lights automatically starting working again.See "Related Questions" below for more

The lights on your 1999 ford windstar lx will not go off?

If the lights that won't go off are the interior lights, then it could be a symptom of a stuck 'door ajar' switch/sensor. In that case, see "Related Questions" below for more discussion, fixes, and permanent repairs on the door ajar problem.

How do you activate door lights of a 1999 ford windstar?

The Windstar has a position on the light dimmer scroll-wheel that turns the interior lights off, even with the doors open. Great for at the picnic, tailgate party, cleaning the car, etc, to keep from killing the battery. Make sure the dimmer switch scroll wheel is not all the way up (or is all the way down?) Also - If you have a malfunctioning "door ajar" switch, after some time, the Windstar will deactivate the interior lights. Fix the door ajar warning and the lights will resume normal functions. Why does my interior lights stay on in my 98' ford windstar nstar?

How do you shut off the interior lights in a Ford Windstar?

To turn off all the interior lights, move the dimmer switch "scroll wheel" all the way to the bottom - you'll feel it hit an indent. If you're having problems with the interior lights staying on with all the doors closed, it's likely to be the very common false door ajar warning problem.See "Related Questions" below for more

What is wrong 1998 when my Ford explorer interior lights blink?

Is door ajar light on also?

What can cause the interior lights to not work when the door open on a Ford Windstar?

There is a spot, all the way down, on the dimmer 'scroll-wheel' type dial that will disable the interior lightsWhen I had one of those common problems with the false 'door ajar' situations, my 2001 SEL deactivated the interior lights. Once I resolved the false signals coming from the liftgate, the interior lights automatically started behaving normally all by themselves.See "Related Questions" below for more

Why do the cabin lights of your 2001 windstar flash?

This sure sounds like the lights are being triggered by the door ajar problem that is so common with Windstars.See "Related Questions" below for more

Ford Windstar battery constantly discharges?

make sure the glove box light isn't staying on There is something drawing down the battery - and a common problem is the door ajar sensors causing the interior lights to stay on. See "Related Questions" below for more about that.

Why wont the interior lights go off in your 1997 ford explorer?

I'm not a mechanic / technician but on a 1997 Ford Explorer I believe that if the gauge panel dimmer switch ( to the right of your headlight switch ) is rotated all the way up it will turn on all the interior courtesy lights when the doors are closed Also , is the " DOOR AJAR " warning light on in your dash to the left of the fuel gauge , if so either a door or the liftgate is slightly ajar or a door ajar switch is sticking , I believe that will also keep the interior lights on

How can I turn off the interior lights in a 1997 Ford Explorer?

Just to the right of your headlight switch is a dimmer wheel for your gauge lighting If the dimmer wheel has been rotated all the way up , your interior courtesy lights will stay on ( even with your doors closed ) If your interior lights are on with a door ajar indicator light on in your gauge cluster , either a door ,your liftgate , or your liftgate glass is not closed or you have a sticking door ajar switch (Helpfull)

How do you install a toggle switch for interior lights on a 1998 windstar?

Sounds like you may be suffering from lights that stay on - likely due to a false door ajar signal coming from one of the door sensors. This is very very common with a number of Ford products (I've had it with both my Sable and 2001 Windstar) The solution is the same for both: lots & lots of spray lube (like WD40).
