We will assume you are asking about the slave trade in the United States, as this gets the most attention. Slave trading was common in many countries at that time, and still practiced in some countries today. Most modern day slave trading is limited to Africa and Asia although some is still found (illegally) in many other countries.

The primary purpose for bringing black individuals to America originally was to marry them to original settlers as women didn't willing wish to come to this very rough new country.

As time went on, more and more of the trade revolved around bringing in workers for crops that could then be sold. Slaves were property that were extremely valuable and were treated as you would treat any expensive tool. Cared for well, but not allowed to be left out to be used for purposes other then it was intended for.

This practice of slavery ended shortly after the civil war.
