If you put them in water, then they both separate and the chloried and nitrate switch places. It becomes Magnesium nitrate and lead chloride, one turns yellow and sinks while the other's clear and floats. I think. There is no reaction with metallic Lead (Pb) because Pb is more stable to oxidation then Mg-metal, which is the same as saying Mg2+ ions are stable compared to Pb2+, so they are not formed from the metallic Pb
