Any abnormal noise in the transmission is bad - some noises are worse than others. However, you didn't post enough information to be more specific than that. Is it a manual or automatic? Does it make noise shifting into 3rd gear, shifting out of 3rd gear or when driving in third gear? Under load and coasting or just under load ... or just coasting? All the time, or just intermittently?

How do you stop my standard transmission from grinding going into third gear?

To stop a standard transmission from grinding into third gear, check the level of the transmission fluid. If the noise continues, consult a mechanic.

Why does third gear grind on a 1998 jeep wrangler?

Your transmission synchros might be going out. Also, shift slower and see if that helps. A Jeep isn't a racecar, so shifting slower is easier on the transmission. Changing transmission fluid to a different brand might also help your problem.

1999 Saab 9-3 transmission crunches when pushed quickly into third gear How much for new synchros or Is there another way to fix it?

Shifting up or down? The probable answer is that your synchros are worn and you need to get in touch with your car better by not trying to shift too fast now that the damage is done. Learn to "double clutch" shifting down and use light clutch pressure barely dis-engaging the clutch when shifting up so you can feel the gears match speed. With care you can probably drive it forever. Good luck because the other fix is a new transmission.

If its not the shift solenoids what could prevent the transmission from shifting into third gear and overdrive?

If your transmission is not shifting into third gear and overdrive it could be a parking pawl. This prevents the transmission from rotating.

Why does Trans makes brief grinding noise when changing to third or fourth gear?

I assume you are referring to a manual transmission. Grinding while changing gears is an indication of a synchronizer going bad. Until you get it fixed, try double clutching when shifting.

Why would a standard column transmission pop out of third gear?

Why won't my Toyota Corolla go in third gear?

I've been researching this myself as well. I have a 1996 Geo Prizm that uses the same 5-spd transmission. 3rd gear grinds but will not engage. I replaced the transmission with one from a 1991 Toyota Corolla from the junkyard. Except for the speed sensor, they are identical. I still have the same third gear problem. I consulted a friend who is a 20+ year GM mechanic and did some internet research. I believe that these transmissions (C50 and C52 models) have bad third gear synchronizers. I dissected the old transmission, expecting to find half a gears worth of metal shavings in the case. It looks really clean - I plan to have an expert inspect the third gear parts, since I'm not sure what a worn synchro looks like exactly. It's very frustrating to replace a transmission and have the same problem as when I started! The car is driveable, I simply shift from second to fourth. All the other gears engage and work perfectly. I wish I had a better answer, like an adjustment or something, but it looks like these transmissions have a weak third gear part that goes bad before the rest of the unit. I think the only cure is to have the transmission rebuilt with new synchros.

Why does a 1983 Honda CT110 chatter in third gear only third gear at any speed up shift or down?

Third gear could have a broken tooth, chipped tooth or bent tooth on the gear and only makes a noise when it has drive pressure applied to it, so either way when pressure is applied it makes a noise.

Toyota Avalon automatic will not shift to third gear when cold?

Are you sure that it's third it's not shifting into, and not fourth? The transmission is designed to not permit shifts into fourth (overdrive) until the engine and transmission have warmed up a bit.
