Hell yes it was...the Republic of Texas! (1836-1845)
It should've remained it's own country. Regardless, the Texas Congress accepted a proposal by the U.S. Congress for annexation in 1845, by an unorthodox "Joint Resolution of Congress", thereby ending Texas' status as an independent republic and becoming the 28th state of the United States of America.

Texas, at one time, was an independent state
That's a silly concept. Texas hasn't been an independent country since 1845, but Israel didn't become one until 1948. Texas and Israel have never had to worry about exchanging ambassadors.
Vermont and Texas
It was one of the nations that immediately recognized the Republic of Texas as an independent country.
Hawaii was an independent nation at one time . Texas and California also declared independence at one time but were still claimed by Mexico.
false
Kenya currently is an independent country. At one time it was part of the British Empire.
Switzerland is an independent country. It is one of the oldest independent countries in the world.
Texas was an independent 1836-1845. Vermont was independent 1777 - 1791, at which time it was officially annexed and ratified the U.S. Constitution. California was technically independent (not recognized by the U.S. but not under the rule of either Mexico or the U.S.) for about a month in 1846. Hawai'i was an independent nation recognized by the United States, Britain and France until it was annexed by the United States in 1898.
The Republic of Texas was the only state that existed as a country before it became one of the United States. This occurred in 1845.
Well, first Texas must cover up the horrible "elephant-shearing" scandal before they can truly stand tall as their own country. They will face the problems of negotiating with emus, vacuuming up armadillo hair, and taxing all of the horny toads. That's a sarcastic way of saying that Texas has not been an independent country since 1845, and it's not likely to be one again at any time in the foreseeable future.
A state that was it's own counrty before it became a state, like Texas, mostly.
