This decisive event in English history took place on October 14 1066. Contrary to popular notion the battle was actually fought 6 miles north of Hastings which is located on the Southeast coast of England. The town battle grew up around a abbey which was built on the site. The Battle of Hastings was the last time England was successfully invaded and conquered by a foreign army. Hastings is in the south of England, south of London and near the southern coast of the British Isle.
