if you have taken out the pump you have a marking on the pump and on the tank so you must lock the pump in place by turning it to lock it. but check the wiring.
I had the same problem with a 1992 Park Avenue with the 3800 engine. I first replaced the electronic ignition but that did not fix the problem. I then replaced the crankshaft heat sensor. That fixed my problem.
Be sure the interior light over-ride switch is not turned off or the fuse is not blown.

Until the problem causing the check engine light to go on is fixed. It might not be the gas cap, or the one you replaced it with could be wrong.
