The Suez Canal allows wider European commerce with Asia. The Suez Canal connects the Mediterranean to the Red Sea, and therefore to the Indian ocean. It is valuable as a shortcut to Middle East oil supplies, although many of the largest modern tankers are too big for the Canal.
