There are different types of monarchy, and they have different positive and negative attributes. However, there are some central advantages that all monarchies possess.

The monarch often provides a focus for national identity, as well as acting as a 'brand' for the nation. In diplomacy, a long-reigning monarch can accumulate contacts and friends in high places across the world which can help in negotiations.

As well as these, different types of monarchy have different advantages and disadvantages.

An absolute monarchy, such as that in the current Kingdom of Saudi Arabia or the Kingdom of France (up until 1789), is where the sovereign has absolute power to make law and to govern; it has the potential to provide a great degree of stability and continuity of policy. Usually unrestrained by public scrutiny of its actions, an absolute monarch can react quickly to events. These countries have a large potential for falling into authoritarianism and can easily be insulated from public opinion. The large amount of power put into the hands of the monarch makes it more likely that a weak monarch will be ousted in favour of a rival.

A limited monarchy, such as the Kingdom of England in the early 17th century or arguably before, is where the King has full authority to govern, but can only make laws with the approval of a legislature. This still has the continuity of policy and stability during the reign of the monarch, but allows for some form of public say on laws and government. This still puts a large amount of power into the hands of one person, and it's still quite likely that a weak sovereign will be deposed by a rival.

A strong constitutional monarchy, such as the current Principality of Liechtenstein or the Kingdom of England between 1689 and the mid-1830's, is where the sovereign plays an active role in making policy, but appoints a head of government (usually known as a prime minister nowadays) from the legislature to make policy as well as govern. Provided the legislature is representative of the country, this tends to provide a great deal of stability along with laws formed around public opinion, but the more interference from the monarch, the more likely it will become either a weak constitutional monarchy or a limited monarchy.

A weak constitutional monarchy, such as the current Kingdom of England or current Kingdom of Sweden, is where the monarch plays no role in policy making (by law or convention) while the government makes policy decisions, and sometimes members of the legislature can propose law as well. The country is to all intents and purposes a democracy providing a representative legislature and will have all the advantages of one in addition to having an apolitical embodiment of the country rather than a partisan politician. It can be seen by some, however, to be less legitimate than a republic because the (virtually powerless) head of state is not elected.

Monarch literally means rule by one person. The positive side is that one person can act more more quickly and decisively than a group. It is also less expensive to support one leader than an entire congress. If the monarch is benevolent and wise, a monarchy works very well provided the people like him.

The negative aspect , besides the possibility of a bad monarch, is the problem of ending his term and replacing him. The Romans used to elect a dictator in time of dire emergency to serve for just one month, The problem was that some dictators did not step down when their term ended.

The monarchy is often an inherited position and that causes another problem.
