Have you tried replacing the tacho cable?, it comes out of the rear of the clocks and goes into the front of the engine. It needs to be unscrewed at both ends, if it cannot be unscrewed at the engine end remove what it attaches to and try to unscrew it, don't pull it out (you probably wont be able too) because it will knacker the thread.
