yes u do have to take off crank pulley and it is a chain inside you should not attempt this with out a manual because you will need to know how to line the timing marks up if you do not get this right you will end up with valves colliding with pistons that gets very expensive

There is a power steering pulley puller that only uses the hub portion to remove it from the pump shaft. An auto parts store should have such a tool for rent or purchase.

You remove no pulleys. Just loosen the belt and then remove the alternator.

Take off belt, remove bolt in center of pulley, replace with new pulley (comes with bearing). Reverse to install Take off belt, remove bolt in center of pulley, replace with new pulley (comes with bearing).

You can change an idler pulley on a 2001 Monte Carlo by first, removing the negative cable from the battery. Using a socket wrench, loosen the tension adjustment bolt. Slide the serpentine belt away from the pulley. Remove?æthe center bolt, and remove the pulley from the engine. Replace the pulley,?æreturn and tighten the bolts, and replace the serpentine belt.
The easiest way to access the pulley is to remove the front right wheel and fender liner. The pulley will be right behind the liner.
Lift car on jack stands, remove right wheel for better access,remove any belts, remove pulley bolt, then use a pulley remover to remove pulley, carefully pry out old seal thebn tap in new seal with mallet or plastic hammer, if pulley has ridges on it you may have to replace pulley or you might still have leaks. reinstall pulley,bolt, belts and wheel. remove the coil packs on top the engine with a small tork bit then change plugs
You need a special tool, pulley puller and installer to remove the pulley first then you remove both hose and bolts to remove the pump, then install new pump and hoses, bolts and finally install the pulley with the special tool, never try to hammer in the pulley, if you do new pump will brake
