The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon" church) moved from New York to Ohio to Missouri to Illlinois and finally to what is now Utah. The headquarters of the Church has remained in Salt Lake City since 1847, however the membership abroad has increased dramatically. Today, only about 10% of the world's 14.5 million Mormons live in Utah.
At the time the Mormon Pioneers arrived there, it was part of Mexico, however, 50 years later it became the modern day states of Utah, Arizona, Nevada, Idaho, and Wyoming, along with parts of California.
This depends on what you consider to be the 'west'. When the Mormons were founding settlements in Missouri, Illinois, and Nebraska, this was considered the western frontier. The United States didn't extend much further, and this was a sparsely populated 'wild west'. The Mormons eventually moved to what is now Salt Lake City, Utah (at the time it was part of Mexico) and settled much of Utah, Idaho, Arizona, and Nevada.
