The Cold War, an 'undeclared war' between Communism and Capitalism. Basically, it was a struggle by the West and Communist nations to prove whose government was better. Several wars actually did break out between Communist and Capitalist countries, namely and most well known, the Vietnam War as well as the Korean War. The US and USSR, the superpowers of the time, came very close to war themselves several times. Most well-known of these was the Cuban Missile Crisis. US president Kennedy used spy planes to discover the Soviet Union under Khrushchev was helping Cuba develop nuclear weapons. Declaring that he opposed the move (kind of pointless, considering there was no evidence Cuba or USSR ever planned to use the missiles) he made a naval blockade of the island. When Khrushchev heard of this, he gave his commanders the order to fire nuclear weapons into the US if they attacked (basically making the Fallout games a reality). Eventually, Khrushchev, the older and more experienced of the two, realized that the situation would escalate and cause untold damage (again, Fallout) and decided to stop the program to pretty much save the world a nuclear holocaust.
