No, John A. Macdonald was not French.

==========================================

Canada, as a country, dates back to Confederation in 1867. At this time Canada was under British rule, so all Canadians were British. The first Prime Minister of Canada was Sir John A. Macdonald, an anglophone who, prior to Confederation, had been the Joint Premier of the Province of Canada for Canada West (Ontario).

Responsible government - where the governor bows to the will of the people's elected representatives - dates back only to the late 1840s in the British North American colonies. Prior to that, Governors, Governors General, and Lieutenant Governors who were - and are to this day - appointed by the Monarch, were far more dominant and directly involved in governance. As a result, the role of a first minister was much smaller, if it existed at all.

The first Governors of what is now Canada were French. The very first one was Samuel de Champlain, de facto Governor of New France. This lasted until 1760, with the last French Governor being Pierre François de Rigaud, and the first British Governor being Sir Jeffery Amherst.

First french Canadian prime minister?

Though the first native-born Canadian Prime Minister from French Canada was John Abbott, he was a Freemason and tried to get the United States to Annex Canada, so we won't count him. Wilfrid Laurie, who served as Prime Minister of Canada from 1896-1911, was the first francophone Prime Minister and took conciliatory steps between French and English Canada.
