From about 1919 to 1933, it was a parliamentary republic- very similar to the current governments of Australia and Canada, and even resembling the United Kingdom's.

After March 1933, with the ascension of Adolf Hitler and his Nazi Party, the Weimar Republic was transformed into a totalitarian Dictatorship. The Nazis were not technically fascists, as there are some subtle differences between the two, but they are very similar and have many things in common. For that reason, it is common to see the term "fascist" applied to Nazis.
