She was not a lesbian! SOME PEOPLE WOULD ARGUE THAT "Tubman was a devout Christian and so I find it difficult to believe that she was a lesbian and I also don't understand why someone would ask such an inappropriate question about such an honored ancestor. "

However to suggest that a devout Christian would not be a lesbian is absurd. Who a person loves and is attracted to has nothing to do with which religion one decides to embrace if any.

The Honorable Harriet Tubman used religion to liberate herself and others, not to bind them. She was/is a liberator; she would be likely to love and care for whoever her heart drew her towards - like Ruth & Naomi, like Sapho, or like Thelma and Louise (smile).

The hardened pseudo-christian political positions taken by the some devotees today belies the liberating origins of Gospel Music or the Azusa movement. Those heterosexist positions taken do not mean that the honorable Harriet Tubman would have ascribed to them any more than she believed in any of the bigotry expressed during her time: for example, she did not believe that a slave should be obedient to her master or that women should be subservient to their husbands or that women and children were the property of their husbands/fathers, or that a woman could be beaten by her husband as long as the stick used to beat her was no larger than the average man's thumb (aka the "rule of thumb"). Nor did she believe that a woman should be quiet and constrained to her duties in the private sector of her husband's home. She obviously did not believe in these commonly held misconceptions of the proper role of woman - and did not act them out even when she was safely retired from her extensive tour of duty where she saved hundreds of people from the miserable life of enslavement.

Even the KKK claims to be a christian organization, but thankfully, not all of the denominations espouse to their beliefs When the court in Virginia found Mr. & Mrs. Loving guilty of marrying & sentenced them to prison because he was white and she was not, they cited bible passages to support their idea that it was a sin and the laws were justified by the bible!

There are certainly thousands if not millions of lesbians, past and present, who are in fact devout Christians. See Bishop Yvette Flunder, for example. Not all Christians believe the same thing or interpret the Bible in the same way - the shakers did not believe in having sex at all; the Mormons (a self-described christian denomination - believed in multiple marriages - the catholic church does not believe in divorce (in some places, not legal because of the catholic church's influence on the government) some teach that sex for procreation only is okay, but for fun, it is a sin; it is obvious that this is true - just look at the different sects, denominations, etc. Seven different ways to conduct baptism, who to pray to (e.g., Jesus only; father god; mother god; father-mother god; father, son, & holy ghost; Mary, mother of god; the saints;the trinity; baptize at birth or by choice; whether to give permission to attend se4rvices of other denominations; whether to permit others to take communion; whether communion is transsubstantiation or symbolic; until recently Purgatory or no Purgatory - last I heard, Purgatory is out - I wonder what happened to all who were sent there.

For women: wearing pants was a sin - still is in some churches - Harriet certainly broke that rule - cutting hair was/is a sin; beoming a preacher or even speaking in some churches; questioning a husband's decision; leading ones' husband or household; working ouside the home - all of these things can be found to be a sin in a Christian church in America today! Not that I am evaluating - I'm just pointing out that there are as many different ways in the United States of America to be a Christian as there are denominations, churches, sects etc.
