Hezekiah was not at all successful in changing the Hebrew religion of polytheism to monotheism. What Hezekiah did need to do was call for national repentance and return to the 'God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob' the one true God who led the Israelites out of Egypt.
Certainly, King Hezekia (729-686 BCE) made the first real attempt, in historic times to impose a monotheistic religion in Judah. King Hezekiah is said to have removed the high places, cut down the groves of the goddess Asherah and even destroyed Nehushtan, the serpent god of the Temple. But Hezekiah's own son, Manasseh, remained faithful to the polytheistic religion of Judah, as did the people. Manasseh's son, Amon, continued to support polytheism. On this evidence, polytheism survived throughout his reign, at least in private worship, and returned as both the official and popular religion of Judah.
It is only from around 621, under King Josiah, that a monotheistic religion seems to have become dominant among the Jews.
