Russia (then a part of the USSR) signed a non-aggression pact with Nazi Germany in August of 1939. The Soviets agreed not to attack Hitler and he agreed not to do so as well, Russia was still in alliance with the Allied Powers but started to subjugate Eastern Europe instead. In June of 1941, Hitler broke the non-aggression pact and attacked the USSR, which made the USSR into a full-fledged comrade of the Allies' war effort. They, in the end, were given the honor of taking Berlin.
