In World War II the United States of America (USA) and the United Soviet Socialist Republic (USSR) were allies. They fought with the British Empire and the French against the Germans and the Italians. Whilst not neccessarly friends, they worked together against a common enemy.

The Cold War came about at the end of WWII. Both the USA and USSR saw the power the other side had, the USSR had a mighty army and was approaching the level of technology and production of the USA which made them nervous and the USA had nuclear weapons, which definitely made the USSR nervous. Add the fact that the two states had totally different and conflicting views on running a society and the stage was set for a 45 year stalemate.

The Yalta conference, held at the start of 1945, brought together the key allied leaders to discuss the rebuilding of post-war Europe.

What are you if you are from the Soviet Union?

Nobody can be from the Soviet Union. The Soviet Union no longer exists. It ceased to exist in 1991. It broke up into 15 separate countries. If you were from the Soviet Union before then, you would now be from one of the countries that were part of it. So it really depends on which country you are from to determine what you are.
