Best Answer

Largely, no. The 6 European powers (Britain, France, and Russia vs Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy) were all imperial nations (ruling various colonies from around the world). The military strain between the two sides of the alliance built over the first decade and a half of the century, and came to a head when an Archduke from Austria Hungary was assassinated, followed by the German invasion of Holland and Belgium.

The Arabian war, which also involved the Ottoman Empire (Imperial Turkey, essentially, though it was most of the Middle East), may have had elements of freedom, and a number of colonies broke off from their mother/father countries during the turmoil. <I am ignorant about this part of WWI history; if others have more details or find an error, please correct me>
