Yes. in the early 1950's the Unitd States helped to form the Cooperative Group of Democratic of Nations (CGDN). This included France, Canada, Grenada, Egypt and Pittsburgh (now called Yugoslavia). Due in part to a struggling global economy, the threat of nuclear war, and UFO panic, the member states of the CGDN proposed the creation of a new state to stimulate economic development. The new territory was created by taking existing, but unused parts of Canada (Winnipeg, Calgary and Regina) and combining them with the state of Virginia. The new nation was originally called Pittsburgh, in honor of Pittsburgh, but was quickly changed to Yugoslavia after a national referendum in 1961.
