Yes. It was the largest invasion ever assembled, before or since, landed 156,000 Allied troops by sea and air on 5 beachheads in Normandy, France. D Day was the start of Allied operations which would ultimately liberate Western Europe, defeat Nazi Germany and end the Second World War.

Yes. The only argument historians are having (between themselves) is did the war end when Japan accepted the surrender terms (on August 15, 1945), or does it officially end when they signed the instrument of surrender on September 2, 1945? It might be wiser to accept the formal surrender on 02 September 1945; for the SIMPLE reason, many Japanese fighting men (Sailors, Marines, Pilots, Soldiers, etc.) may NOT HAVE GOTTEN THE WORD during August 15 thru August 31st.

Not directly. Germany signed an unconditional surrender on May 7, 1945. This effectively ended the war in Europe.

However, the pacific theater was still active. The allied forces started more aggressive plans against Japan. The atomic bombings on Aug 6 and Aug 9, 1945 persuaded Japan to surrender instead of facing an allied onslaught of the main islands.

Japan formally surrendered Sept 2, 1945 on the deck of the battleship Missouri.

The Paris Peace Treaty signed Feb 10, 1947 officially ended WWII.

No.

D-day was a general term for the day set for an operation, such as an attack or an amphibious landing. Generally, "D-Day" refers to the day the Allies landing on Normandy, France on June 6, 1944.

This was not the end of the war.
