Almost everywhere - for a schoolgirl to become pregnant or simply to be caught having sex in 1948 was considered more shocking than words can tell. I have the diary of a deceased female member of my family. She was at school from 1916-1929, and the diary starts in 1924. In 1927 a friend of a friend got pregnant at age 16. The girl apparently couldn't bring herself to tell her mother (a very strict puritan, apparently) and committed suicide.
