As for being successful or effective in the goal to capture and maintain the holy city of Jerusalem. Only the First Crusade with King Richard I actually captured Jersualem. WIthin years of that capture the Muslims arose and overcame the Christian defenders. The subsequent crusades never had the same glory as the first.

The crusades were effective in rallying the European people for a cause they beleived in.

The crusades were also effective in establishing trade and knowledge between Europe and Asia.
