There is a fuzzy line when it comes to religion and politics as they blend into one at some point for the dominant belief systems of Catholics and Muslims.

The RC Church has always desired a Holy Roman Empire with a religous leader - Pope - dominating the world. The Muslims look for a Caliphate with their leader - Mahdi - dominating the world. This is the backdrop of the Crusades and the Ottoman Empire incursions into Europe.

In Europe itself, the aftermath of the Black Plaque made people question the authority and rules of the RC Church. This lead to the Protestant Reformation, the English Reformation and the 30 Years War that killed so many people. The outcome was a re-blending of the rules of the Church to the State/adherents.

Scripture reveals just such a divide in the world powers with the King of the North and the King of the South battle in a future time just ahead. There is also a False Prophet or religious leader spurring the King of the North on and perhaps a similar situation in the South. The story in the Book of Revelation then speaks to the King of the East coming upon the victorious King of the North who turns and joins the Eastern armies when Jesus' makes His 2nd Coming. The final battle is outside of Jerusalem with Christ winning and ushering in the Kingdom of God government in the Millennial Rule.

What is the most powerful the religion or the politics?

Neither, really. Both have influences on society and it depends who you are. But I would personally say politics. It governs more, has more control over us. Religion is a choice, you have to obey the laws of the land, but again: it depends who you are.

How does religon affect the world?

Religion is responsible for most of the bigotry, oppression and wars in the world. Religion, politics and wealth have always been closely intertwined. Religion gave politicians and the rich individuals the tools to control their workers and servants it has also been used as a tool to maintain political dominance of the world order. Most of the laws in these countries are based on religious fanaticism. When a competing religion threatens the economic control of another then terrorism, persecution and war is used to destroy the competition. Religious wars have more to do with wealth, power and greed, than it has to do with righteousness and piety. Many people throughout the world have been oppressed, enslaved and slaughtered because of religion. Women have been persecuted and denigrated because of religion.

How does religion effect politics?

It is interesting how blind some people can be when their aim is to denigrate religion. The previous answer to this question began: "It is more the other way around. Religion has always been used as a political tool to control people and make them happy so they don't revolt. Politics has also often affected religion." If this is true, and it certainly has a lot going for it, then clearly if religion is used as a political tool then it is indeed political aims which corrupt religion. Though of course there are plenty of examples of people using religion for nefarious ends. It is important, however, to distinguish between religions; and between any particular religion and the way it's ideas have been/are being hijacked by certain individuals and/or groups for destructive purposes. Pretending that ALL religions are the same is a good recipe for generating insane ideas. It is a good idea to beware of anyone you find preaching this kind of unsane thinking.

Well, specifically, you have to know what religion we're talking about. But, if it's a general question: We are now able to combine science and religion without starting wars. We have also come up with more realistic, or appropriate ways of dealing with religious issues.
