All 1963 to early 1965 full-sized Pontiacs were available with the Chevy 409 cubic-inch V8. As Canadian Pontiacs utilized Chevrolet engines across the board the offerings were similar to Chevys of the same period from both the U.S. and Canada. The full-sized Pontiac lineup in Canada during this time included the low-line Strato Chief, mid-line Laurentian and flagship Parisienne. A Parisienne Custom Sport coupe was added to the line in 1964, which had styling features similar to the Grand Prix in the U.S. including grillework, rear deck trim and squared-off roofline with concave rear window. The bucket seats were also the same as the GPs which the dashboard was similar to all U.S.-built Pontiacs but the steering wheel and center console between the seats were Chevrolet items - the Chevy steering wheel and shift quadrant on top of the column rather than in the dash as in U.S. Pontiacs was necessitated due to the use of the Powerglide transmission (U.S. Pontiacs had Hydra-Matics). The console from the Impala SS was also utilized for this same reason. For 1963 and 1964, the 409 was available in three horsepower ratings including 340 with four-barrel carb and hydraulic lifters, 400 horsepower with four-barrel carb and solid lifters, and 425 with two four-barrels and solid lifters. The 340 horsepower engine was available with either the three-speed manual, four-speed manual or Powerglide, while the 400 and 425 horsepower options required the four-speed stick. Only the 340 and 400 horsepower 409s were offered for 1965. Production of the 409 engines ended in January, 1965. Replacing the 409 in mid-1965 was the new porcupine-head 396 cubic-inch V8 rated at 325 horsepower with four-barrel carb and hydraulic lifters or 425 horses with four barrels and solid lifters. The 325 horsepower 396 could be ordered with an equally-new (for Canadian Pontiacs) three-speed Turbo Hydra-Matic transmission.
