The European Union did not officially come into existence until the 1st of November 1993. Prior to that it was called the European Community. Before that it was the European Economic Community, which was founded in 1957. An organisation called the European Coal and Steel Community was started in 1952, which is what you may be referring to. The countries that started it and the European Economic Community were France, West Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, Belgium and the Netherlands.
They are called the European Union. But not all countries that are in the European Union use Euros. And there are some countries who are not in the European Union who use Euros.
People do not join the European Union. Countries do. It is an organisation of countries, not of people. As a result of countries joining, people are living in countries that are in the European Union and can be called its citizens.
The White ManÃ?s Burden is a 19th century poem by Rudyard Kipling that implied the act of colonialism was the noble responsibility of European and Americans to help the natives of these countries to rise up and better themselves. The poem, in general, referred to the period of colonization of countries by European powers sometimes called cultural Imperialism as a noble Christian effort.
Greece joined what was then called the European Economic Community, now called the European Union, in 1981.
As of the 1st of January 2011, 17 of the 27 members of the European Union use the Euro as their currency. Those 17 countries are sometimes called the Euro Zone. See the related questions.
