I think you you are asking about varactor diode. varactor means variable capacitor. varactor diode is a p-n junction diode which provide a capacitance across it subjected to applied forward and reverse bias. means it provide variable capacitance which depends on the applied reverse voltage(mostly varactor diode works on reverse voltage). They are also known as varicap
A varactor diode is most commonly used as the variable reactor. The varactor is a semiconductor pnjunction diode, and its junction capacitance is varied by the application of a steady signal from a local microwave oscillator, called the pump. Amplification of weak signal waves occurs through a nonlinear modulation or signal-mixing process which produces additional signal waves at other frequencies. This process may provide negative-resistance amplification for the applied signal wave and increased power in one or more of the new frequencies which are generated.
Diffusion capacitance is the capacitance due to transport of charge carriers between two terminals of a device. - Amog This diffusion capacitance is due to depletion capacitance which is a function of forward bias applied to emitter junction of a transistor and due to diffusion capacitance which a function of transconductance of the transistor. Its value is 100 pF. Tirupanyam B.V
The varactor diode is a semiconductor diode but in this kind, the capacitance is supposed to vary according to the applied voltage. It has an exponent factor that bears a negative fraction value.
Any variation of the charge within a p-n diode with an applied voltage variation yields a capacitance wich must be added to the circuit model of a p-n diode. The capacitance associated with the charge variation in the depletion layer is called the junction capacitance, while the capacitance associated with the excess carriers in the quasi-neutral region is called the diffusion capacitance. Both types of capacitances are non-linear so that we will derive the small-signal capacitance in each case. We will find that the junction capacitance dominates for reverse-biased diodes, while the diffusion capacitance dominates in strongly forward-biased diodes. The total capacitance is the sum of both.

Generally, the depletion region thickness is proportional to thehttp://www.answers.com/topic/square-root of the applied voltage; and http://www.answers.com/topic/capacitanceis inversely proportional to the depletion region thickness. Thus, the capacitance is inversely proportional to the square root of applied voltage.
It is called a varactor or a varicap diode. Its capacitance varies nonlinearly with the reverse voltage applied to its terminals.
It includes RF design , parametric amplification ,fm, harmonic generators, voltage controlled oscillators ,in radio ,tv,cellular and wireless receivers ,and in electronic tuning .. That's it. . .

Transition capacitance : A reverse biased PN-junction has a region of high resistivity (depletion layer) sandwiched in between two regions of relatively low resistivity. The P-N regions act as the plates of a capacitor and the depletion layer acts as the dielectric This is known as the transition capacitance or depletion capacitance. Diffusion capacitance : It is the capacitance due to transport of charge carriers between two terminals of a device like the forward biased PN junction. In a semiconductor device with a current flowing through it (for example, an ongoing transport of charge by diffusion) at a particular moment there is necessarily some charge in the process of transit through the device. If the applied voltage changes to a different value and the current changes to a different value, a different amount of charge will be in transit in the new circumstances. The change in the amount of transiting charge divided by the change in the voltage causing it is the diffusion capacitance. The adjective "diffusion" is used because the original use of this term was for junction http://www.answers.com/topic/diode, where the charge transport was via the diffusion mechanism.
A capacitor is a device that stores charge. Therefore any device that stores charges( static or dynamic) can be said to have capacitance. When a PN diode is forward biased, a current flows due to the majority charge carriers. At a particular instant there will be charges in motion. This is dynamic charge. The capacitance due to storage of dynamic charge is called the diffusion capacitance. We know that C = Q * V. That is capacitance is directly proportional to charge stored. Since the diode current increases exponentially with the voltage applied across it, the dynamic charge also increases exponentially . Hence the diffusion capacitance increases exponentially with the increasing diode voltage.
The unit of power measured is watt, irrespective of resistance, capacitance or inductance of the circuit.

Capacitors are built to different specifications depending on application. The higher the capacitance the more charge the capacitor can store. The capacity to store electric charge, when a voltage is applied. Measured in Farad = Coulomb/Volt. In other words, if for every volt applied the capacitor stores 1 coulomb of charge, it would have a capacitance of 1 farad. In practice this is a huge unit, and the capacitance is usually expressed in micro-, nano-, or even pico-Farad.
