George B. McLellan
General George B. McClellan believed that training marches were required to keep his troops battle ready and in shape for extended marches while in training. Training marches were frequent and were carried out both in the day and night. For training soldiers in large numbers, he had trains accompany the marching soldiers. Trains were there in case an unforeseen battle operation. If the enemy was planning an unexpected offensive, the trains could quickly carry the Union troops to the battle field.
The general nickname for Union soldiers was Billy Yank.
Many soldiers on each side died during the battle and the only general that died was General Don Carlos Buell
