The former two cities had an advantage over Boston for several reasons:

A. The soil in the areas close to New York and Philadelphia was better for farming and producing a variety of crops, more so than Boston;

B. The Hudson and Delaware rivers were longer and wider than the Charles River in Massachusetts. This gave the former cities more towns and cities reachable by cargo carrying vessels then the smaller Charles River; and

C. The Connecticut River, also serving Boston markets, created tons of silt that created sandbars. These posed a problem for cargo vessels using the Connecticut

River.
