Well - I'm fifteen and what my mum did was just explain to me the dangers and the possibilities of the internet, and basically told me to be careful.
I would tell them not to trust anyone in virtual worlds, chat rooms and whatever. &never to tell anyone you're address.. I guess even your name is risky. Giving strangers online your email address isn't always safe either.. But (if you're a parent) after you've told them all this, trust them to listen to you and maybe even make their own small mistakes, because after doubting you they'll know you know what you're talking about and will definitely take you seriously!
All in all - I think freedom, trust and awareness are the key things you should give to them and the best way of handling the situation! Hope it goes well :)
