The Soviets tried to emulate the US Military in the Vietnam War. The Soviets used BMP's, their version of the US M-113 APC/ACAV (Armored Personnel Carriers/Armored Cavalry Assault Vehicles); T-72 tanks in the same category as our M-48 Patton tanks; Hind attack helicopters, in the same league as our UH-1 Huey & Cobra Attack Helicopters, and tactical jet fighter bombers to attack their enemy in Afghanistan. The only difference between the Soviet's Afghanistan War and the US's Vietnam War was the Soviets were not fighting Another Country (they were fighting against insurgents WITHIN Afghanistan); they did not conduct strategical bombing with their heavy bombers, as there were no oil depots, railroads, or industrial targets to bomb; as the US did to North Vietnam with the B-52 Stratofortess heavy bombers. And the Soviets could not negotiate with their enemies government, since there was no government to negotiate with. Soviet Air Forces had no enemy Air Forces to fight in aerial combat. Since there was no enemy government, no enemy air force, no regular army, or navy. The best way to have eliminated the insurgents would have been to use the Soviet Elite Forces to surgically kill them. Removing their leaders often causes the collapse of insurgent movements.

The war in Vietnam, the Korean War, World War 1, World War 2...were fought against Nations (countries). The United States is NOT at war with Iraq nor Afghanistan. The US is at war with insurgents/terrorists (criminals that attacked New York City on 9/11); they just happen to be in the Iraq/Afghanistan regions.

Why did America go to war in Afghanistan after helping put the Taliban into power during the Russia-Afghanistan war?

The Americans exploited the concept of Jihad in Islam to fight the soviets and push them out of Afghanistan, However, when the Mujahedeen ( The Islamic holy fighters) won the war and started to rule, their policy did suit the Americans. For example, Taliban ( the term used now for the Mujahdeen) are sympathatic with Arabs due to Islamic ties with them. This support included anti-Israeli position and call for the Palestinan cause. Such policy made the Americans move against Taliban and declared war against them specially after what happened in 9-11 and the support Osama Bin Laden by the Taliban. The Mujahadeen.

Why the troop are fighting in Afghanistan?

Our troop are fighting in Afghanistan to protect our freedom against the numerous terrorist groups taking refuge there. Some of these groups we hear about are in with religious groups like the Taliban, that threaten not only our freedom but the freedom of everyone near them through terrorist attacks. Our society believes that everyone everywhere has a right to live and worship whomever in peace without threats of terror and violence made against them. That is the true reason why our troops fight in Afghanistan is to keep the war from spilling over onto our shores.

On what date did the War in Afghanistan begin?

Afganistan has had many wars over the centuries. The Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan on December 24th, 1979, and they withdrew ten years later. The Taliban, a fanatical offshoot of Islam supported by the US, siezed control of Afghanistan which then became divided by civil war. In this war the US supported the Northern Alliance (known in Afghanistan as the United Front) in their war against the Taliban, and they liberated a sizable portion of the northern part of the country. After eleven years of fighting the Taliban covertly, the US committed air and ground forces to Afghanistan in 2001, and the Taliban was officially deposed, but fighting in Afghanistan continues.
