Bodies of water surrounding Australia:

Australia's western half is bordered by the Indian Ocean, and the eastern coast meets the Pacific Ocean. To the north are the Timor and Arafura seas, to the northeast is the Coral Sea and to the southeast in the Tasman Sea. To the south of Tasmania is the Southern Ocean, sometimes called the Great Southern Ocean or the Antarctic Ocean.

Major rivers in Australia:

The Murray - Darling system is the major river systemin Australia and is the most well-known, but it is not a single river. The Murray and the Darling are two separate rivers, with the Darling a tributary of the Murray.

Other well-known rivers are:

  • Flinders River (longest in Queensland), Diamantina River and Cooper Creek which run through western Queensland and ultimately empty into Lake Eyre
  • Lachlan River, which flows into the Murrumbidgee River which, in turn, flows into the Murray. The Lachlan and Murrumbidgee form one of the major irrigation areas of New South Wales.
  • Culgoa, Balonne, Warrego and Condamine Rivers which feed the Darling River
  • Gascoyne River, the longest in Western Australia
  • Goulburn River (Victoria)
  • Hunter River, one that frequently floods in NSW, together with the Clarence and the Richmond
  • Dumaresq, Macintyre and Tweed Rivers, which form part of the border between Queensland and NSW
  • Burdekin River, forming a major dam in northern Queensland

Other significant rivers: (There are many more than those listed here)

  • Queensland: Dawson, Barcoo, Warrego, Mitchell, Condamine, Bremer, Georgina, Flinders, Logan, Albert, Coomera, Calliope, Mary, Caboolture, North Pine, Fitzroy, Tully, Moonie, Mackenzie, Boyne, Bulloo

  • Victoria: Goulburn, Mitta Mitta, Wimmera, Loddon, Kiewa, Ovens, Glenelg, Broken, Avoca, Avon, Werribee, Maribyrnong, Dargo, Wannon
  • South Australia: Angas, Onkaparinga, Gawler, North Para, South Para, Wakefield
  • Western Australia: Ord, Gascoyne, Fitzroy, Fortescue, Murchison, Nicholson, Hutt, Canning, Margaret, Avon, Forrest
  • Tasmania: Tamar, Clyde, Franklin, Gordon, King, Huon, Styx, Plenty, Mersey, Macquarie, Forth, North Esk, South Esk
  • Northern Territory: Roper, Katherine, Adelaide, Todd, Finke, Alligator, Daly, Georgina
  • Australian Capital Territory: Cotter, Naas, Gudgenby, Jerrabomberra Creek, Ginninderra Creek

Each of Australia's state capital cities is built on a river.

  • Sydney - Hawkesbury and Parramatta Rivers
  • Melbourne - Yarra
  • Adelaide - Torrens
  • Brisbane - Brisbane
  • Perth - Swan
  • Hobart - Derwent
  • Australia's national capital, Canberra, is on the Molonglo River

Major lakes:

  • Lake Eyre (North and South) - SA
  • Lake Amadeus - NT
  • Lake Frome - SA
  • Lake Gairdner - SA
  • Lake Torrens - SA
  • Willandra Lakes - NSW
  • Lake Eucumbene - NSW
  • Lake Mungo - NSW
  • Lake Corangamite - Vic
  • Lake Mackay - WA
  • Lake Argyle - WA
  • Lake Gordon - Tas

Lakes Entrance in south-eastern Victoria leads to the sea and is a major tourist area, with the interconnecting 'lakes' of Lake Wellington, Lake Victoria, Loch Sport, and others. The Coorong in South Australia is also significant.
