The Battle of Hamburger Hill (Ap Bia Mountain May 10-20, 1969) occurred during Operation Apache Snow, when US High Command decided to eliminate NVA Forces re-establishing themselves in and around the A Shau Valley; largely due to the previous TET offensive that had occurred earlier in 1968. Approximately 1800 men from 3 US Battalions of the 101st Airborne (Airmobile) Division were lifted into the area by "sticks" of 16 Slicks (Hueys), totalling 64 helicopters near the 970 meter tall mountain. Other ground battalions "swepted" for the NVA westward towards Laos. Ten Batteries of US Artillery (60 guns) supported the fight from 5 surrounding Firebases. US Fighter bombers blasted the hillsides for about an hour, followed by US Attack Helicopter Gunships with a few minutes of prep firing. The brunt of the fight was laid on the 3/187th Infantry (101st Abn (Ambl); over 50% casualties. When a US unit loses fifty per cent of their unit, they are rated, "NO-LONGER COMBAT EFFECTIVE." Although the average US Infantry Unit during the Vietnam War was averaged at about 600 men, at authorized strength; Nearly any Vietnam Veteran will state that "Nearly ALL" US units in the field in Vietnam were "under strength." Meaning that a 600 man battalion was more likely 400 to 500 men. 40 man platoons were often 30 man platoons, etc. Total US Casualties after the fight was estimated at approximately 70 dead and nearly 400 wounded. The hill was taken. 1969 was the year "Man Landed on the Moon." And MOST people in the US were wondering why a "World War 2" type battle was occurring in the "Space Age!" The Battle sparked an immediate CONTROVERSY. When the Generals involved were asked (By the press) why they just didn't "...B-52 the NVA off the mountain top...", the Generals replied, "...people have to learn you don't win battles by air power alone, it still takes men on the ground to win battles..." Most US Generals fighting in the Vietnam War WERE Veterans of World War 2. WWII was won by those men fighting many "Hamburger Hills" during World War 2. And Vietnam would be fought the same way!
